Roberta Flack’s First Take offers a quietly powerful introduction to her soulful voice and nuanced piano work, blending heartfelt ballads like “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with socially conscious tunes such as “Compared To What.” The album’s intimate acoustic arrangements invite focused listening, revealing the subtle emotional layers that set Flack apart from her contemporaries. It’s a record that feels personal without ever losing sight of the broader human experience, a balance that’s as compelling today as when it first appeared. This pressing from Presswell presents that delicate blend on vinyl with a glossy surface showing only minor light scuffs typical of careful handling. The sound quality should remain clear, making it a solid choice for anyone wanting to explore Flack’s early work without the distraction of surface noise. For those arranging their collection, this record slots neatly among singer-pianist-driven albums where understated artistry holds the spotlight, proving sometimes less really is more—especially when it’s this well executed.
