Kansas’ 1975 album Masque offers a compelling mix of progressive and hard rock that stands out in the band’s early catalog. Known for its darker lyrical themes penned by Kerry Livgren, this third release includes powerful tracks like “Icarus – Borne On Wings Of Steel” and “Mysteries And Mayhem,” which many regard as some of Kansas’ finest rock moments. Robbie Steinhardt’s violin adds a unique edge, blending seamlessly with the complex instrumental interplay that hints at the band’s later successes on Leftoverture and Point of Know Return. The title, meaning a theatrical or musical disguise, suits the album’s layered and theatrical sound, inviting listeners to peel back its many facets. This 1975 pressing brings Masque to vinyl collectors who appreciate a focused listening experience from a band that bridged American rock with progressive influences. The record is graded VG+, which means it shows typical signs of use such as light surface marks and minor scuffs but remains solid for regular play without major distractions. It’s the kind of album that might not wear a mask in your collection, but it certainly knows how to put on a show when spun.
