Joe Jackson – Look Sharp – LP

Joe Jackson’s Look Sharp! captures the energy of late-70s new wave with a live band feel, thanks to producer David Kershenbaum’s choice to record many tracks in first takes without overdubs. The album includes the sharp social critique of “Sunday Papers,” which skewers British tabloids, and the cleverly cynical “Fools In Love,” reflecting Jackson’s shift from his earlier band’s sound. Its cover, featuring a pair of white shoes, earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest album covers, adding visual flair to this debut’s punchy mix of pub rock and new wave. “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” remains a defining track that helped establish Jackson’s reputation for witty songwriting. This 1979 pressing offers a solid vintage feel on vinyl, presented in a standard format that fits neatly alongside other new wave records. The vinyl is graded VG+, indicating it has some light surface marks or paper scuffs but nothing that should interfere significantly with listening. If you’re after a lively snapshot of Jackson’s early sound that’s ready to spin without fuss, this copy stands up well to casual play and collection alike. After all, every record deserves a sharp look now and then.
