Exuma’s self-titled debut from 1970 captures the spirit of Bahamian folk through a raw, acoustic small-group setup that invites focused listening. Drawing on his childhood memories of Junkanoo festivals, Exuma—born Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey—blends mystical storytelling with hypnotic rhythms, especially on tracks like “The Obeah Man” and “Junkanoo.” The cover art, painted by Exuma himself, shows a startled self-portrait that hints at the album’s unique and experimental edge, setting it apart visually as well as sonically. This 1970 Mercury pressing presents the album in its original vinyl form, perfect for those who appreciate the tangible connection to a record’s era. The vinyl shows signs of its age with noticeable surface noise and wear, so expect a listening experience that reflects its VG- condition. It’s a record that asks for a careful ear and some patience—like stepping into Exuma’s world, where folklore and folk music collide in a way that’s both inviting and a little wild.
