First Cuckoo by Deodato presents a thoughtful blend of jazz musicianship and compositional craft, reflecting the artist’s multifaceted role as pianist, composer, and bandleader. Nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist around this era, Deodato offers a listening experience that rewards focus and attention, with arrangements that balance intricate acoustic interplay and polished production. This 1975 pressing brings out the subtle textures and nuanced performances that mark the album as a standout in Deodato’s catalog, appealing to those who appreciate carefully arranged small ensemble jazz. This vinyl pressing from 1975 holds up well for regular play, graded VG+ which suggests it has some minor surface marks typical of its age but nothing intrusive on the sound. As a single LP, it fits neatly into collections that favor jazz and focused listening without sprawling into multiple discs. If you’re after a record that combines compositional depth with the feel of a live ensemble, this copy of First Cuckoo offers that in a package that’s ready to spin. It’s the kind of record where the music does the talking, making the groove its own quiet conversation.
