Nightshift finds the Commodores navigating a new chapter after Lionel Richie’s departure, with J.D. Nicholas stepping up as lead vocalist and Dennis Lambert taking over production. The title track stands out as a heartfelt tribute that earned a Grammy and brought the band back into R&B and pop spotlight, even as the rest of the album settles into easygoing grooves and thoughtful ballads like “Animal Instinct” and “The Woman In My Life.” While the album didn’t quite match the band’s earlier heights, it offers a smooth, focused listening experience that reflects the mid-’80s R&B sound and the group’s resilience. This 1985 pressing is a straightforward vinyl edition that holds its own on the shelf, with the VG+ condition suggesting light surface marks but no significant play issues—perfect for those who appreciate the era’s production and the Commodores’ later work. It’s the kind of record that might quietly remind you why “Nightshift” still resonates decades later, even if the rest of the album doesn’t shout for attention.
