Breakwater’s Splashdown offers a finely tuned blend of funk and soul that leans into intimate, focused performances rather than sprawling production. The album’s acoustic ensemble crafts a sound that invites careful attention, with tracks like “Release The Beast” and “Love Of My Life” showcasing tight grooves and thoughtful melodies. It’s a record that rewards listeners who appreciate subtle interplay within a compact band setting, carving out its own space in the 1980 funk landscape without shouting over the competition. This 1980 pressing presents the album in its original vinyl format, preserving the detailed musicianship that defines the record. The vinyl here is in very clean condition, showing only minor surface marks consistent with careful handling, which means it should offer reliable playback with minimal distraction. For those building a collection centered on focused listening experiences or exploring funk’s quieter corners, this pressing of Splashdown balances musical depth with a solid physical presentation—no need to dive into the deep end without a good flotation device.
